How to Download Wilcom Free for 14 Days and Explore Its New Features

A Temporary and Affordable Solution for Embroidery Designers

A few days ago, I found out that Wilcom had released a new version of their embroidery digitizing software. I went to their website to learn more, and I was surprised to discover three major updates that could be a great temporary solution for those who need to design without investing right away:

  • You can download the official software for free and use it for 14 days.
  • It’s now available under a monthly subscription model, like a Netflix-style service.
  • This makes using Wilcom much more accessible, without needing to make a big upfront investment.

In this post, I’ll walk you through how to download, install, and start using the software. I’ll also highlight some of the new features, current pricing, and an alternative that might be more convenient if you’re just getting started.

Step by Step – How to Download and Install Wilcom for Free

1. Go to the official website

Visit wilcom.com and click the Spain flag to switch the language to Spanish (or your preferred language).

2. Create an account or log in

Click “Log in”. If you don’t have an account, you can create one by entering your name, email address, and a password. You’ll receive a verification email.

3. Download the trial version

Once logged in, you’ll see the different software versions available. Click to start the download.
When it finishes, open your downloads folder, right-click the file, and choose “Run as administrator.”

4. Follow the installation process

  • Accept the terms and conditions.
  • Choose “Full installation.”
  • Make sure the language is set to Spanish or English.
  • Select the installation folder (default is drive C; I installed it on drive D).
  • Click “Install.”

The installation may take several minutes depending on your computer. It’s normal for several windows to open and close during this process. When it’s done, restart your computer if prompted.

5. Activate the free trial

When you open the program, log in with your account email and password. You’ll see that you now have 14-day access.
I recommend selecting the “Designing” version, as it includes all features.

Can You Use It Offline?

One of the first things I tested was whether the software works without an internet connection. I disconnected my internet, and the program ran just fine: I was able to digitize embroidery objects, save designs, and access the built-in library. You don’t need to stay connected to keep working.

What’s New in This Version?

New Stitch Types

  • Ripple Stitch: This was previously possible only through manual adjustments. Now it can be applied directly from the object properties — ideal for shading and gradient effects.
  • Spiral Fill: It already existed, but now it’s easier to apply without tweaking so many settings.

Auto Digitizing from Images

You can now import an image and automatically convert it into stitches.
This is a fast feature, though it doesn’t always deliver clean results — especially on designs with lots of stitch direction changes.

Auto Outlines

You can select an object and instantly generate a running stitch outline. This is especially useful for quick jobs or when you don’t want to manually create borders.

“Handcrafted Look” Auto Digitizing

I also tested an image with lots of detail. The result was similar to a hand-embroidered look.
However, the generated file had over 66,000 stitches in less than 15 cm, so it may not be efficient — but it could be interesting for those unfamiliar with manual digitizing.

My Opinion – Is It Worth It?

As a professional embroidery designer with over 15 years of experience, I didn’t find completely new tools, but I did notice several improvements to existing ones. The interface looks more polished and feels more stable, which is great.

For advanced users, it’s not a game-changing update — but for beginners, these upgrades could make the learning curve much easier.

How Much Does Wilcom Designing Cost?

The full version costs $4,000 USD, but now you can subscribe monthly for $149 USD/month.
Depending on your country, this price may feel expensive or fair — but it’s still far more accessible than paying the full license all at once.

A More Affordable Alternative – Hatch Embroidery

While researching this video, I discovered another option offered by Wilcom: Hatch.
It’s designed for beginners and offers several advantages:

  • 30-day free trial
  • Total price of $1,100 USD
  • Or $99/month for one year (after that, the program is yours to keep)

I plan to test it soon and will post a video with my full review. I’m curious to see whether it’s easier for beginners and whether it’s officially available in Latin America.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a way to practice or work with Wilcom without making a big financial commitment, this 14-day free trial could be exactly what you need.

And if you’re just starting out, keep an eye out for my next post or video about Hatch Embroidery — it might be a more beginner-friendly and affordable option to dive into the world of embroidery digitizing.
