What Is an Embroidery Object, and Why Is It Important to Understand It First?
Many beginners make the mistake of jumping into digitizing without understanding the most basic elements of the software.
One of the most fundamental concepts is the embroidery object.
An object is simply “a shaped element” that you can:
- Select
- Move
- Rotate
- Resize
- Modify its shape or color
In WILCOM, every embroidery object also has specific stitch properties, such as:
- Stitch type
- Density (the spacing between stitches)
Mastering these basics is key to creating logos, decorations, or embroidered products with high quality.
Why Is It So Important to Understand the Basics of WILCOM?
Before learning how to digitize complex designs, it’s crucial to get comfortable with the software environment.
Doing so will help you locate tools more easily and work more smoothly as you progress in your embroidery projects.
Follow These 4 Steps to Start Designing Embroidery in WILCOM
Step 1: Launch the Program
It may sound obvious, but it’s the first essential step:
- Make sure WILCOM is installed on your computer
- Double-click the icon and wait for it to load
Not much else to say here… that’s how simple it is to get started.
Step 2: Understand the Auto Fabric Assistant
When the software starts, a window called the Auto Fabric Assistant will appear.
This step is key to avoiding mistakes related to fabric settings.
What can you do here?
- Choose the type of fabric you’ll be embroidering on
- Enable or disable the option to show this assistant on startup
- Let the software automatically adjust stitch settings based on fabric elasticity, stiffness, or texture
This improves embroidery results from the beginning.
Even though we won’t use it in this tutorial, it’s important that you know its purpose.
Step 3: Explore the WILCOM Interface
Once you close the assistant, a new design document will open.
Here are the main interface elements you should become familiar with:
Key Interface Elements:
- Dropdown Menu Bar (top): Access to general functions
- Universal Toolbar: Switch between artwork and embroidery modes
- Standard Toolbar: Create, open, or save designs
- View Toolbar: Controls what and how you see on the screen
- Toolbox (left): Where you create embroidery objects
- Object Properties Bar (right): Configure stitch types and effects
- Design Window (center): Main workspace for your embroidery designs
- Color Palette (bottom): Select thread colors
- Status Bar (bottom): Shows useful info like total stitches or warnings
Tip: Getting comfortable with each section will make working in WILCOM much more efficient.
Step 4: Learn the 4 Ways to Create an Embroidery Object
One of the most common beginner mistakes is not knowing how to begin creating an embroidery object.
The good news is: there are only four basic ways to do it, depending on the tool you use.
The 4 ways to create an embroidery object in WILCOM:
- Freehand Shapes

4 steps, 4 methods—coincidence? I don’t think so! (Just kidding 😊)
